The unit is a bit noisier than the other two Haier units that I have, but not annoying. I have it set so that it turns itself off completely when it reaches temperature, instead of having the fan continue blowing, and that is a great feature. The unit arrived with some exterior cosmetic damage and, because the vendor would not order the replacement parts, I contacted Haier and found their customer support to be very helpful. My other two units are two years old and operate without a hitch.

I installed the unit by myself, but recommend and extra pair of hands to put it on the sill.

Haier Freezer - White (3.5 cu. ft.)

I bought this freezer because my refrigerator is apartment sized and doesn't have a very large freezer. Furthermore, most of what space the freezer in my fridge does have is taken up by the ice maker (I don't know why refrigerator manufacturers can't design ice makers to use freezer space more efficiently than they currently do).

The 3.5 cu ft size is actually a little larger than I really need (although it's still very compact, takes up little space and is a good size for an apartment) but Haier's only smaller freezer currently is 1.3 cu ft and was simply too small for me (although it may be a perfect size for some others). Unless you are absolutely certain of what size you want and before making your purchase, I would recommend trying to find the various small freezer sizes on display in an brick/mortar store if possible so that you can get a better idea of what their actual size looks like for real.

I finally did that simply because I found it tough to get an adequate idea of size and capacity just by attempting to visualize product measurements published online. Once I did that however, I made my purchase online because shipping charges for doing so were much less expensive than delivery charges had I purchased it at a brick/mortar store.

I was initially very reluctant to purchase a Haier freezer because of the number of reviews both here on Amazon and elsewhere for this model (and for some of their other small models) which noted that they were poorly packed and arrived with damage. For reasons I will go into shortly, I decided that Haier was the brand I wanted however and decided to take a chance on the packaging problem and purchase one.

I'm glad that I did. They apparently have corrected the problem because my freezer arrived well packed and without damage. My freezer order was actually processed by Target and shipped by them but according to the box labels, all of the packaging had been done by Haier.

The freezer was packed in a first box, with large protective styrofoam pallets placed on the top and bottom of the freezer and inside the box. That box was then wrapped in a considerable amount of thick bubble wrap and placed inside an even larger box for shipping. The freezer itself was completely undamaged when it arrived.

I had done some research on the brands of small freezers and after discovering that Haier (which is a manufacturing company located primarily in China) actually manufactures many of the freezers and refrigerators for a number of well known American brands (including probably the largest and most well-known of them all, the one with 2 initials in its name), and after reading a number of positive internet reviews by satisfied customers, I decided that it was the brand that I wanted. The lower price and apparently good value of this model also played a key role in my decision.

The freezer has two indicator lights, a red one to show that power is on to the device and a green one to indicate when the compressor is running. I haven't had mine very long yet but so far, the freezer thermometer I placed inside has been showing a consistently low temp of 0 degrees (or slightly below), which is quite adequate. The compressor doesn't have to run very much and when it does, it's so quiet that you probably won't hear it. It is not an automatic defrost but reports I've read say it only needs manual defrost every few years and even then it is quite easy to do (there is a defrost drain connection).

All in all, I am very pleased with my purchase and the freezer has been an enormous convenience. The reason I didn't rate it as 5 stars is because I am not yet sure of its reliability/longevity (and also because there doesn't seem to be a clear, easy method of contacting their service dept. should you need it). It may turn out to run as long without problems as other freezer brands I am familiar with (most seem to last about 10 years or slightly more) but I simply don't know yet, not having had any other experience with this brand. Obviously freezers and refrigerators are different than other appliances and require more reliability because of the risk that if they break down prematurely, you will lose valuable food contents.

This freezer does have a warranty of 1 year parts and labor and 5 years on the sealed refrigeration system. I do have a question about what happens if you *do* happen to need service and have to contact Haier service to stand behind their warranty. Right now, the only way there seems to be to contact their service on their website is to send them an email message and wait for them to email back. I have found some international phone numbers for their service on the internet however but never having tried them, I can't speak to their usefulness.

Pros -

- Seems Well Made

- Works perfectly so far and keeps food very cold

- Extremely quiet

- Very Convenient

- Has indicator lights, one to show that the freezer has power and the other to show when the compressor is operating.

Cons -

- No phone number for customer service should you need it. Currently, the only way of contacting their service department apparently is to email them and wait for them to email you back. With some diligence you may be able to locate some phone numbers however.

- May need occasional manual defrosting (which doesn't seem like a very big deal to accomplish).

I did A LOT of research before buying this portable a/c, and I have to say I am very pleased with my choice. I live in NYC where the humid heat is unrelenting, and the dehumidification feature does wonders. Also- I have left the a/c on for days at a time and not once have I had to drain excess water. And, set up was a breeze. My only complaint is that the unit can be noisy- it makes quite a bit of noise when the cooling system kicks on and off; so much so, actually, that after two minths it still wakes me up if I am not in a deep sleep. But, that is a small complaint in the midst of a mostly happy review. If you can't have a window unit, I definitely recommend this portable a/c.

So in my early retirement at 59 I don't take the HEAT as well when I was younger like many people I think? Not much insulation in this 1920 built apartment building, although the new roof had some put in. Still on the few heat wave days and NIGHTS it's impossible to sleep living on the top floor four stories high. Ceiling fans are a MUST, one big Hunter in the Livingroom, one Smaller 5200 FPM=feet per minute is there measurement, the livingroom unit you can't buy anymore is rated at 7800FPM, amazing. So the Haier Model ESA408J-T is a fine unit in every aspect.

Were having 90's in the day now and high 60's at night, and its a beautiful 68 degrees in here now and I'm going to bed. It took a number of hours to cool down the unit, actually I have a Total of 550 plus square Feet, but closing off some doors to the hallway bathroom, and kitchen and spare bedroom I use as a home office makes the area I'm cooling about 275 SQ-FT. It's on energy mode now and this unit replaced an older LG LW5200ERY3 5000BTU unit I'd picked up off the Street one day and that unit was somewhat more quiet than the Haier, but the cooling output of course is far superior to the Older LG, but I am keeping the old LG just in case.
I like a backup plan B in life. I ran this on low cool for five hours to bring the room temp down from 85 to 68 and brother it's nice. The remote works very well, even from a distance, no issues there. It actually had become slightly more quiet since it first began operating today! So I have a sound meter and I think I'll take a reading.
OK, so at a distance of ten to twelve feet its 52Db, that's pretty low!
I bought this at Target on clearence for 9.23 including tax. Ity had a retail tag of 9.00, so I have to say unless it blows up, this looks to be a great investment, and I like Haier Mini Frig units too. THE EER is rated at 10.8!
I'll report back in time and give a follow up. But I think I got a real deal and its well built in my view, the plastic air direction blades are a little flimsey, but once you set them just leave them alone and there fine.
So to recap, low noise, very cold output, Remote works great and from a distance, the Noise reading from ten feet away was 52Db, with a 10.8 EER rate energy Efficency Ratio.
